Do We Need A Police Force in NSW?
The following is the Annual Police Report for 2022 – 2023. We have summarized our findings. Please Read it and let us know what you think. The latest statistics suggest the following:
“NSW Police hit with 26,000 complaints, 5000 found to have engaged in misconduct. Frontline cops have been inundated with complaints from the public, as NSW Police reveal 5000 cases of NSW Police officers found to have engaged in “misconduct” over the last five years.” ~ Sky News Report
Summary 2023 Police Report
The NSW Police produces a performance report yearly. It is written by the Police Commissioner in Charge during that period. This year the Police Commissioner is Karen Web. In her 2023 Introduction she has been quoted as stating, ” The past reporting year (2022-2023) has seen the organization deliver many key projects and initiatives in line with the Corporate Plan, ‘Our Focus, Our Future’ that forms my vision of a safer NSW.
Our Focus, Our Future reinforces our purpose to work with the community to reduce violence, crime and fear and will enable us to adapt to complex and changing operating environments.”
The Police Organisation
The Police Charter
In the 2022-23 financial year, the NSW Government funding contributions to the NSW Police Force was over five billion dollars.
Police Aims and Objectives
The NSW Police Force vision is ‘a safer NSW’ and our mission is to work with the community to reduce violence, crime and fear. The NSW Police Force Statement of Strategic Intent describes our organisational priorities and outlines how we intend to build safer communities.
We prevent crime, maintain public safety and engage the community through our focus on:
• Prevention: We safeguard and strengthen individuals, communities, assets and infrastructure to deter crime, improve personal safety and build resilience. We intervene early for at-risk individuals and groups to limit escalation, minimise harm and positively influence behavior. We divert minor offenders and at-risk groups – such as young people and Aboriginal people – to reduce re-offending and avoid unnecessary contact with the criminal justice system.
• Disruption: We interrupt criminal behavior to break criminal networks and bring offenders to justice.
• Response: We deliver professional policing services to maintain community confidence.
• Capability: We develop capable and resilient people to maximise performance. We build effective systems to future-proof our service delivery. We enhance leadership to build an agile
and innovative organisation.
How we performed
The performance indicators in this section relate to the mission of the NSW Police Force to work with the community to reduce violence, crime, and fear, as set out in the Police Act 1990. Revisions to previous year’s statistics reflect updates to operational databases and recording methodologies to align with State Outcomes reporting. The NSW Police Force ‘Our Focus Our Future’ outlines how our vision of ‘A Safer NSW’ will be achieved through Prevention, Disruption, Response and Capability.
In her report for the year 2o23 she reported the following State Policing Outcomes:
Key: the bold text at the margins represent synthesis of the information in real numbers. Are the numbers correct?
The first question I would ask you is “how accurate is this data“? Please filter this information with your own experiences and of those whom you know and then determine whether we need a Police Force or something else.
The second question I would ask is “how effective is the Police Services in fulfilling their Police Charter“?
The last question I ask is “our Policing Force worth the 5+ billion dollars that we are expending and are we getting our monies worth in terms of useful services“?
Keep in mind these important facts!
In 2020, NSW Police had 21,455 employees – 17,348 police officers and 4,107 support staff, 432 police stations, 3,300 vehicles, 52 boats, 9 aircraft and a budget of AUD $4.8 billion. It is organized into police area commands (PACs) in metropolitan areas, police districts (PDs) in rural areas and specialist commands. Review again the true number for the volume of crime that occurs within the NSW borders. Again I ask you… Is our Policing Force worth the money?
